I paint Nature.
This Nature, is to be calm and apeasing, yet powerful, overwhelming and ever-lasting.
But sometimes it is also imprinted by mankind.
Deforestation, global warming et pollution are the core of my preoccupations.
I paint great expanses where mankind is often alone outside, or hidden in a small house tucked on the side of a hill, or yet again standing next to a lighthouse, glazing over a strangely still and empty sea.
Tiny compared to the magnificent wilderness...
My work is like a permanent reality check:
"Don't forget what made you."
Everything is static, like it came to a full stop. Time is suspended.
We wait for the resolution of a ruthless fight between mankind and Nature.
Who will prevail?
Nature it makes no doubt; This is what I want to believe anyway.
Do we have any other choice than being optimistic if we want to carry on living?
Nature, hurt by mankind, but victorious!
I think this is the underlying idea that gives my canvases an apeasing power over those who contemplate them.
I use oil painting.
I put the first layers on an acrylic background that I let emerge in some places. One of the characteristics of my style consists in limiting the elements of the canvas with a burnt shadow stroke. My inspiration comes mainly from photographs that I take in nature and that I appropriate, or from my imagination, especially for the skies. Three painters influence my artistic journey:
Charles Sheeler for the purity of the lines.
Grant Wood for the geometry in the landscapes.
Edouard Hopper for the realism and the melancholy in his artwork.
